Инцидентът е станал на прав участък малко преди изкачването към прохода. Свидетели на катастрофата съобщават, че скоростта на леката кола е била значително по-висока от допустимото за този път.
На място незабавно са изпратени екипи на пътна полиция и Центъра за спешна медицинска помощ. Двама от пътуващите в BMW-то – и двамата млади мъже – са били откарани в болницата с леки наранявания, без опасност за живота. Шофьорът на джипа не е пострадал.
Катастрофата е предизвикала временно затруднение в движението в района, докато екипите на МВР извършват оглед и регулират трафика.
Причините за инцидента се изясняват. Предполага се, че основна роля е изиграла несъобразената скорост, като не се изключва и разсейване на водача.
От пътна полиция апелират към всички шофьори да бъдат особено внимателни при преминаване през планински участъци като този към Предела. Въпреки че пътната настилка изглежда суха и безопасна, в района често се случват катастрофи именно заради подценяване на условията и превишаване на скоростта.
