В утрото на 11 септември 2001 г. четири пътнически самолета, отвлечени от членове на терористичната организация „Ал Кайда“, удариха ключови цели на американска земя. Два от тях се врязаха в кулите близнаци на Световния търговски център в Ню Йорк, които рухнаха пред очите на целия свят. Третият самолет се заби в сградата на Пентагона край Вашингтон, а четвъртият – „Юнайтед 93“ – падна в поле в Пенсилвания, след като пътниците се опитаха да възпрепятстват похитителите.
Събитията се превърнаха в глобален шок – телевизионните кадри от рухващите небостъргачи обиколиха планетата и оставиха трайна следа в съзнанието на милиони.
Памет и почит
В Ню Йорк, Вашингтон и Пенсилвания днес отново ще се съберат близки на жертвите, оцелели, пожарникари и политици, за да отдадат почит на загиналите. На площад „Граунд Зиро“ ще прозвучат имената на всички жертви, а традиционно ще бъде спазена минута мълчание в часовете на атаките.
В Пентагона ще се проведе мемориална церемония, на която ще присъстват и висши представители на американската администрация. Президентът на САЩ също ще направи обръщение към нацията, припомняйки, че „11 септември никога няма да бъде забравен“.
Светът след атентата
Последиците от 11 септември белязаха цяло поколение. В отговор на атаките САЩ започнаха войната срещу тероризма, нахлуха в Афганистан и по-късно в Ирак. Бяха създадени нови механизми за сигурност, като Департаментът за вътрешна сигурност и по-строги правила за въздушните пътувания.
Днес, 24 години по-късно, раните все още не са напълно заздравели. Споменът за деня, в който светът видя уязвимостта на една от най-мощните държави, остава жив. Но за мнозина 11 септември е и символ на човешката сила, на героизма на пожарникарите и доброволците, на обединението пред лицето на трагедията.
