Свети Димитър е живял през III–IV век в град Солун. Той бил син на управител, но вместо да следва светската власт, избрал да служи на Бога. Заради своята вяра и открито проповядване на християнството бил хвърлен в тъмница и загинал мъченически около 306 година. Оттогава името му се свързва със смелост, справедливост и духовна сила.
В православната вяра Свети Димитър е почитан като закрилник на християните и покровител на войните и доблестта. Мощите му, съхранявани в Солун, се смятат за чудотворни и са обект на поклонение от вярващи от цял свят.
На Димитровден отдаваме почит към силата на вярата и духовната устойчивост – качества, които ни помагат да преодоляваме трудностите и да запазим доброто в себе си.
Днес празнуват всички, носещи имената Димитър, Димитрина, Димка, Митко, Мита, Димо и техните производни.
